Meet My New Baby

My new laptop arrived at the weekend while I was in Auckland. Its totally awesome! Way better than my old one and pretty too.

Home Again!

Well my trip to Auckland was a great success, it was awesome catching up with friends, making new ones and most importantly having fun. Phil and Riley managed alright by themselves and now we're all back to normal.

I didn't get home until 10pm last night due to my flight being delayed but it didn't really matter as Riley was asleep and I didn't see him until this morning anyway, but of course I snuck into his room before I went to bed to check on him.

I don't think Riley was expecting to see me this morning as he has no concept of days/time. He was rather quiet at first but before long he was telling me all about what he'd been getting up to with Dad and showing me his new racing car. I also learnt some very interesting things .....

Riley: 'Guy brought a new computer.'
Me: 'Thats good.'
Riley: 'Dad play on it.'
Me: 'Did he play with you to?'
Riley: 'No, just play on the computer.'

Phil assures me that he did play with Riley this weekend, LOL.

I think Riley is a little confused as to why and where I went. I put him down for his nap this afternoon and as I was leaving the room he asked, 'Mummy going on a plane?' So of course I reassured him that I was staying here and would be coming back to get him after his nap.

Hes been snuggly today so I think he did miss me but now that I've left him once and seen that he is in fact ok without me, it'll be easier for me to leave him again if I need to.

Slow Cooker Recipe: Garlic Lemon Chicken

This is my favourite slow cooker recipe at the moment! I serve it up with rice and whatever veg I have in the fridge at the time. Riley loves it too so it must be good.

500g chicken breasts, halved
1/4 cup flour
1 tsp dried oregano
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp ground black pepper
2 tbsp butter
2 cloves garlic, crushed
3 tbsp lemon juice
1/4 cup water
1 tsp powdered chicken stock

- On a plate mix together the flour, oregano, salt and pepper.

- Coat the chicken in the flour mixture.

- Melt the butter in a frying pan and quickly brown both sides of the chicken.

- Put chicken in the slow cooker.

- Add water, garlic, lemon juice and chicken stock to the frying pan. Bring to the boil then pour over the chicken in the slow cooker.

- Cook on low for 6 hours.

One of the other things that I like to do in my spare time is read. I mainly read Fantasy books but I do like Barbara Erskine though shes my only exception nowadays.

I am currently reading the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind for about the 5th time, only this time I have the whole series, 12 books in total! The only book out of the series that I haven't read yet is the very last one, Confessor, so I thought I should read them all again and refresh my memory. I am up to book 11, Phantom and it has taken me a very long time! Some of the books are more exciting than others so I zoom through them and then others can take me ages plus with a toddler and my other hobbies/commitments, I have very limited reading time.

I can't wait to have actually finished reading the series and finally find out how its all going to end! Will have to update you when I'm done and let you know if it was worth waiting for.

Rain, Rain, Go Away!

We've been going a little stir crazy here at the moment. Its turned really cold and we've had almost non-stop rain all week so we've been stuck inside. Phil has a cold and has been off work for 2 days so at least hes been here to help entertain Riley. I really need to think of some good rainy day activities for Riley and I as I'm sure theres a lot more bad weather to come this winter.

Fingers crossed the weather clears up for my flight to Auckland on Saturday, I'm nervous enough about flying as it is!

Snug as a Bug

This year we thought we'd try Riley in a snuggle suit, instead of his regular pjs in the hope that it will keep him warmer this winter.

In case you have no idea what I'm talking about, heres a pic:

Riley has two now and he absolutely loves them! They feel so snuggly and warm and he hates taking them off. He calls them his 'cutie patootie' and has to wear one for ALL sleeps. He does look rather comical (but oh so cute!) wearing them as the sleeves are way too long and its really big around the middle but that just means that I can comfortably fit extra layers underneath for when its really freezing.

Time Out for Me!

On Saturday I'm flying to Auckland for the weekend and wait for it ..... without Riley! Hes staying at home with Daddy and it'll be the first time that Phil has been in charge of him for more than a couple of hours. It should be interesting to see how they get on and knowing Riley he'll probably be a complete angel while I'm gone! I'll still be leaving notes all over the house to remind Phil of all the things that need doing plus everything to do with Riley that he might need to do know about, but thats more for my peace of mind than anything else.

We have already spoken to Riley about it and he is slowly coming around to the idea of me going away. At first all he would say was 'Riley come too' or when we'd ask him if he'd be alright staying with Dad while I go away he'd reply with 'No no no no' or 'Not really'. Now he asks 'Mummy come back?' which my answer is of course I'm coming back!

I'm really anxious about leaving him for so long as it'll be the longest that I've left him since he was born! In fact he only had his first overnight stay a couple of months ago when he stayed with his Grandparents while Phil and I were at a wedding. I'm happy to be having a break but I don't like the idea of being so far away that I won't be able to get back quickly/easily if I need to.

I am determined to have some fun though. This weekend is all about ME and I intend to make the most of it! So watch out Auckland, here I come!

Nappy wipes

Nappy wipes are my secret weapon when it comes to cleaning. They are brilliant for cleaning walls, doors, window sills, skirting boards and I even used them on the curtains this weekend. They are so easy to grab and safe for Riley to use so he can help me clean too. He is such a good little helper ..... most of the time.

What an Imagination!

Riley is at that gorgeous age where his imagination is working overtime and hes coming up with all sorts of weird and wonderful scenarios and really starting to play and entertain himself.

At the moment we have a lion who lives in a bush outside and yesterday there was a bear at the dinner table, heres the conversation that we had:

Riley: 'Oh theres a bear!'
Me: 'Wheres the bear?'
Riley: 'The bear ate all the broccoli.'
Me: 'Do bears like broccoli?'
Riley: 'Tortilla too.'
Me: 'They like tortilla too?'
Riley: 'And dogs and cars.'

He often comes running wanting me to pick him up and when you ask him whats wrong its always that hes scared of the lion, of course its a great game to him.

The other day I even caught him sharing his drink with a dragon in the lounge!

Growing up too fast!

My little guy is just growing up way too fast, sometimes I feel like I can't keep up with him!

Today it has been one whole month since Riley moved out of his cot and into his big boy bed. I was very anxious about the whole thing but the transition was surprisingly easy. We had tried a couple of months earlier but with no success so I guess this time he was just 'ready'. The first night it took about 2 hours to get him to sleep on his bed because he kept coming out of his room. So the next day up went the gate and its been pretty much smooth sailing ever since. Hes slept on the floor twice and hes fallen out of bed a few times too even with the cot there to prevent it, but after quick cuddles in bed with me he goes back to his bed without a problem.

Fast asleep on the floor by the door ....

His naps have become a bit of trial and error but I think that has more to do with him getting older and not needing them so much anymore.

When we put him to bed he talks about making mummy and daddy so proud and he does every time. In fact it seems almost too good to be true! He stays on his bed right from when he gets put there until someone goes and gets him up.

Swimming Like a Fish

Sunday is swimming day. Sunday is also becoming my regular sleep in day.

Riley's swimming lessons have always been something that Phil and Riley do together ever since Riley started when he was 6 months old. They get to spend some quality time together and it also gives me a bit of time to myself which as we all know sanity time is very important.

Riley missed the first term this year and lost a lot of his water confidence. It really made me see how important it is to keep up with the lessons. For us not much changes in 6 months but for a 2 year old its like a whole new world.

So far hes been to 3 lessons this term and its made the world of difference. Today he came home and told me all about it, how they sang The Wheels on the Bus, blew bubbles and how he went under the water to get the ring at the bottom of the pool! Hes at that great age where he gets really proud of himself for doing things and so he should.

His favourite bit by far though would have to be the spa pool. When the lesson is over Phil takes him into the spa pool and he loves it! After that theres always a warm shower to look forward to and I think that would have to be a close second.

New Look!

Finally after 3 days of trying to figure out how to make it work I managed to get it right! I'm so pleased with it.

Let me know what you think of the new look.

Cars ....

Riley loves anything with wheels and has a rapidly growing Hot Wheels collection. They are both a life saver and a curse. He'll happily spend ages driving his cars around the house, furniture, bookshelves, tables, people ..... you get the picture basically anywhere that there is room for them. He lines them up in rows and zooms them along the floor and he particularly likes pushing them over bumps, or as Riley would say making them go 'bumpity bump'.

Heres a photo of him after hes been lining up his cars. At least some of them have a permanent home by the tv.

Its great that they keep him occupied but not so great when I'm forever picking them up from around the house and have to watch where I'm about to step or sit.

Being so small they also tend to get themselves into tricky situations, like .... under the fridge.

Heres Riley preparing for yet another car rescue mission:

I think I should also have a sign on the front door that says 'Visitors beware, you may turn into a parking garage!' LOL

Heat me up ...

Heres a conversation that Riley and I had yesterday ....

Me: 'Are you still feeling chilly? Shall we get you dressed now?'
Riley: 'Heat me up.'
Me: 'Whats going to heat you up?'
Riley: 'Heat me up in the microwave.'

LOL, I guess thats logical, after all the microwave is used for heating things up.

Riley got his haircut this afternoon. It always amazes me how good he is at the hairdressers.

He had his first haircut when he was 16 months old and has been going regularly ever since. Today he was a bit shy and unsure as he didn't have his usual hairdresser but he still sat through it without complaint. He occupies himself with picking the hair off himself and dropping it on the floor and he knows that at the end of it all waits a lollipop with his name on it.

Here are before and after shots, the photos aren't the best as he wasn't very happy about having his picture taken.

Just before we left the house:

As soon as we got home and I managed to get one without the lollipop in it:

The blue lollipop (he chose it himself) became a permanent part of his hand for about an hour until he decided he couldn't be bothered with it anymore and went off to play with his cars. By then the damage had already been done as his blue lips and tongue could attest. He was quite fascinated by the sight when his dad took him to look in the mirror.

No sleep

Riley has been in bed for about half an hour now happily singing and chatting away. Why do I get the feeling that hes not going to sleep today? He didn't sleep yesterday either and I was so proud of the way he coped but it doesn't mean I want it to be a regular occurrence. After a busy morning at Playcentre you think he'd be tired out, I know I am.

Its always the way, when I actually need him to sleep, he won't.

I thought that I should probably mention one of my hobbies as I'm sure it will feature here quite a bit. In my spare time I like to do digital scrapbooking. I know what you're thinking, toddler? Spare time? Whats that? I don't get much of it and admittedly it is when Riley's sleeping.

Digital scrapbooking is a great way for me to preserve memories and of course my main inspiration is my little man and our family.

Here are a few of my more recent layouts:

Busy, busy, busy

We have two really busy days a week, our Playcentre days. This is usually because we don't get up until 8am and then I only have an hour to give Riley his breakfast, make his lunch, pack his bag and get ourselves dressed. As other parents will know sometimes its a lot of hard work getting a toddler ready who wants to go out but doesn't want to get dressed and he often leaves me exhausted before we've even left the house!

The walk to Playcentre is a pleasant one if a bit chilly with the winter weather now setting in. Riley likes getting out in the pram and is quite a motor head so loves pointing out all the different vehicles that we see. I call them vehicles to hide my ignorance about such things, no one wants to admit that their 2 year old knows more about cars than they do!

It was an indoor day at Playcentre today and they had a special visitor. Someone from the library came in to do a Story Time session with the children. At first Riley was standing right up the front blocking everyone else's view of the books. I kept having to sit him down but eventually he caught on and realized that he could still take part without having to be at the front pointing everything out. It really sank in how grown up he is now.

I must admit to being a bit anxious about entering the world of blogging. I'm not one for saying too much and often what I'm trying to say doesn't come out the way I want but here I am anyway. I promise to try and keep up with it and I'm sure I'll warm to it eventually.

As my title may suggest my life is full of grins and giggles, I have a very cheeky toddler who never fails to make me smile. This blog will primarily be about him and all those funny things that he says/does and my life in general with a 2 year old.
