Kindy Kid?!

We've finally got Riley enrolled in Kindy. He starts on the 1st of November which isn't really that far away and also means that hes almost 3 which is just ridiculous because I still haven't figured out where the last couple of years have gone!

It feels odd having a child whose old enough to go to Kindy, after all he is still my baby. At least Kindy will give him the opportunity to try new things and hopefully gain a little more independence.

Recipe: Pumpkin Scones

- 30g butter
- 2 tbsp caster sugar
- 1/2 cup pumpkin, mashed
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 egg, lightly beaten
- 2 1/2 cups self raising flour

- In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar.
- Stir in the mashed pumpkin, milk and egg.
- Sift in flour and stir together to form a soft dough.
- Turn onto a lightly floured board (use self raising flour), knead lightly. Press or roll out to 2cm thick. Cut into rounds using a floured plain cutter.
- Place onto greased oven trays. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until lightly browned.

I only discovered this scone recipe recently and I've already made them a couple of times. They are so yum and I love that it doesn't require rubbing in the butter, which makes them super easy and quick to make.

Baking Day

Today we had a baking day.

I'm so sick and tired of being the one who misses out and doesn't have anything to eat because the boys have eaten everything or by the time I've sorted Riley out I can't be bothered making myself anything. Of course its all part of being a mum where everyone else comes first. So the point of today was to try and stock up the freezer a bit and also have snacks around for me and Riley.

We made pumpkin scones, a loaf of bread and a pot of carrot and kumara soup (a new recipe that I wanted to try). We also made a self crusting mushroom flan but we ended up eating it for dinner, whoops. Tomorrow I'll probably make either a cake or some muffins with Riley. He loves helping out in the kitchen and it gives us something to do. I've also found a recipe for making my own crackers. They were a big hit so will try and make some more of them at some stage too.

I'm going to give myself a new goal and try and make something once a week to add to the freezer so I always have a quick and easy lunch on hand.

Earring Organizer

I don't have a lot of earrings and I don't often get the chance to wear them anymore for fear of a small child pulling on them, but for ages I've wanted some where to keep them that will keep them tidy.

So I took matters into my own hands and made myself an earring organizer.

It was really simple and now I can see exactly what I've got and keeps them all nice. It looks a little empty at the moment so next I'll have to work on filling it up.
The photos not the best but you get the idea.

Attention Seeking

It could be worse, but when I'm not paying enough attention to my little monkey his way of getting my attention is cuddles and kisses. Regardless of what I'm trying to do he climbs all over me to have a kiss, a cuddle and tell me how much he loves me and how beautiful I am. Too cute and as I said above it could be worse (kicking, screaming, biting, hitting).

It can be a little frustrating sometimes but he knows just the right things to say and do, to melt my heart every time.

Cutlery Roll

For those of us who don't have a picnic set, I made a cutlery roll.

Was really easy to make and I made it out of a tea towel. You could use an old one that you don't want anymore, I bought a set of 3 for $4 in a sale at the Warehouse. It has 12 5cm pockets with a larger pocket at one end.

I'm really happy with the way it turned out considering I'm still figuring out how to use my sewing machine.

Who's On The Phone?

Riley has re-discovered my old cellphone. It doesn't work at all now but Riley has great fun chatting away on it. Today hes received heaps of phone calls from his Nanan and Grandad. Some of them were serious conversations and others he'd crack up laughing at some pretend joke, very cute to watch.

Thanks so much to Renee (Nay's Place) for this awesome apron with built in hot pads, can you believe she made it? I must admit to being a little in awe of her sewing skills.

How cool is the fabric shes used!

Can't wait to get in the kitchen tomorrow and try it out.

Now that I have a sewing machine I also need an iron and an ironing board, both of which I've managed to get without spending too much money.

I got an iron for $9 in a sale at Norman Ross and my ironing board for $5 off Trade Me. Phil is hopefully going to pick it up on Wednesday and then I can get started on some of the little projects that I have lined up.

Died a Slow Death ....

Our washing machine has finally stopped working all together. Its been on the blink for ages now. It would take 3 hours to get one load of washing done and a lot of stopping and restarting. We really should have gotten a new one way before now but the budget didn't really allow for it. Obviously now we don't have a choice, we NEED a washing machine.

So this morning we went shopping for a new one. We had looked before but I was really keen to get a front loader and found that a lot of the stores didn't have a very large selection to choose from. Today we went to Harvey Norman's and they had heaps! Different brands, prices, features, even washer/dryer combos. We've settled on a 7kg Electrolux front loader and its being delivered on Tuesday. It was quite heavily discounted in there sale as with delivery and extended 6 yr warranty it still wasn't cheap.

I am very much looking forward to having an energy/water efficient washing machine that works properly!

New Hat

I took my sewing machine for its first test run today. I found this tutorial here that I thought was a great idea, quick, easy and I didn't need to buy anything to do it. Well my attempt didn't really go as planned and I missed out one of the steps so its rather square but Riley loves it and I can see the potential that the basic design has, with a little tweaking I could do so much with it.

It wouldn't be too hard to go from that:

To something like this:

Riley's new hat looks like it has little ears on top which reminds me of a batman costume and so thats what we spent the afternoon doing .... playing Batman (not that he even knows who Batman is).

Hes wearing the remains of the singlet that I made his hat out of ....

Another Year Gone By ....

Thanks to all my friends for the lovely birthday wishes.

I have had a great day today. Phil surprised me by taking the day off. He got Riley up and brought me breakfast with chocolates and roses in bed. We went for a walk in the morning and sorted out a few things, finally got Riley's Kindy enrollment sorted, he starts on the 1st November! I also got a ps3 game which Phil gave me on Saturday and I have been playing rather a lot of lately.

And ..... we picked up my sewing machine! Thanks heaps to Riley's Nanan who put Phil onto the right person and is putting some money towards it. I am very excited and can't wait to start using it.

Yellow Submarine

Riley is obsessed with the Beatles 'Yellow Submarine' song.

Well, when we were in Spotlight today he thought it would be a great idea to sing the chorus over and over again at the top of his lungs. It was rather embarrassing but it could've been worse (tantrums) and at least hes cute so he can get away with it, lol. Though thanks to the ladies there encouraging him, he decided to sing it all the way home as well, over and over and over ....

Rain, Rain ....

The last couple of days have been pretty miserable, not cold but cloudy and today brought rain as well. Needless to say Riley wasn't in a very good mood being cooped up inside, so out he went. Usually he just hangs around the house if I don't go outside with him but today he was off racing around the garden and chasing a poor cat that likes to visit us, in and out of the bushes. He didn't mind the rain one bit and it was really pouring down at one point.

Recipe: Playdough

- 2 1/2 cups flour
- 1/2 cup salt
- 2 tbsp cream of tartar
- 2 cups boiling water
- 2 tbsp oil
- a few drops of food colouring

- In a large bowl, mix together the flour, salt and cream of tartar.
- Add the boiling water, oil and food colouring. Mix quickly and then knead on a floured board until firm, not sticky (you may need to add extra flour).
- Store in an airtight container.

I love making playdough for Riley. It is so easy and feels so much nicer than shop bought plus he loves it. I usually halve this recipe but it depends how many kids you are making it for as this recipe makes quite a bit. You can also separate it out and add a different colour to each portion.

Wishlist ....

I would love, love, LOVE a sewing machine! I have so many projects that I'd like to try and with a sewing machine I might actually have a chance of making some of them. I'm not the best sewer but I'd love to learn and it would allow me to do so much plus once Riley is at Kindy I'll be looking for a hobby to keep myself occupied, otherwise I won't know what to do with myself!

Day Sleeps, a Thing of the Past

As many of you know we have been struggling with getting Riley to have a nap for a couple of months now. Since moving he hasn't had one at all and I don't think we will be going back. We now have rest time instead where I put on a DVD for a couple of hours in the afternoon. Bad I know but its the only thing that will keep him still long enough to rest or at least play calmly and quietly while he watches. It also means that I can have a bit of time to myself and some peace and quiet so I'm not a complete wreck by the time Phil gets home from work.

It makes for a very long day and now I can't wait until he starts Kindy but hes happy and is handling it well with minimal tantrums. It also means that he falls asleep really quickly at night time and lately hes been sleeping between 13-14 hours which I certainly can't complain about, I am so not a morning person.

Car Watching

Riley is an avid car watcher. As soon as he could sit up he'd be happy to just sit in front of a window and watch cars drive past. Luckily (I think?) for us we've always lived on a main road and 'bus' was one of his first words. Hes still happy now to sit and watch and gives a running commentary of everything he sees (car, blue bus, truck, SUV, another truck, 2 bicycles, a taxi, etc) interspersed with periods of silence and intense concentration. When he was younger if he went silent you always knew where he was and what he was doing.

This photo was taken the morning after our first night in our new house. As soon as he realized he could see the road from our bedroom window he parked himself on top of a stack of boxes and stayed there for ages.

Riley: Look, a dandelion.
Me: No, thats a daisy.
Riley: Oh, a daisylion.

I'm back! The move went as well as could be expected. It took 4 days ..... 4 whole days of stress, exhaustion, toddler tantrums and absolute chaos. I'm so glad its over and now I just have all the unpacking to do.

Riley is settling in well. The first couple of nights were a bit rough but last night he went to bed without a fuss so hopefully that was the breakthrough that we needed.

There is still so much that needs doing but the worst is over.
