1st Day of School

Riley's first day of school went without a hitch. There were no tears or tantrums when it was time for me to leave and I left him sitting happily on the mat.

It's amazing how much more grown up he seems after just one day of school!

Crochet: Adjustable Ring

Since learning to crochet I have struggled with the adjustable ring technique. The adjustable ring is often used in amigurumi projects so you don't have an ugly hole in the centre of your starting round.

I looked at heaps and heaps of tutorials but I just could not get it! Finally I came across a description that I understood and that worked for me so I thought I'd share it here in case anyone else is struggling with making an adjustable ring. I hope it makes sense ....

Wrap yarn around your finger.

Insert hook into the wrap and draw up a loop of working yarn.

Chain one to secure loop and remove ring from finger.

Follow pattern and work stitches of first round in the ring.

Pull gently, but firmly on tail to tighten ring.

Saying Goodbye ....

Yesterday we walked to Kindy for the last time. We said goodbye to Riley's teachers and friends, the people who have played a big part in helping him learn and grow into the wonderful little person that he is.

Monday will mark the beginning of a whole new chapter ....

My Creative Space: Monster Truck Cake

We decided to do a monster truck cake after Riley saw some photos on pinterest. He is still mad about cars and when we first started talking about birthday cakes he initially wanted to have the same cake as last year (you can see it here).

This cake was really simple to put together and we used some of the same ideas from last years cake in regards to the icing and road. I was really pleased with how it turned out and as usual Phil was in charge of the decorating.

Snakes and Ladders Quilt

Riley's Nanan made the coolest snakes and ladders quilt for Riley's birthday ....

She is a very talented lady and makes some beautiful quilts, this one is no exception.

Snakes and ladders on the front and rescue vehicles on the back, with loops so we can hang it on the wall, perfect for my little man.

We've had heaps of fun playing with it already and you've just gotta love the frog counters.

Pokemon Canvas Art

Now I realize not many of you know what Pokemon are but I really wanted to share this canvas that my sister made Riley for his birthday.

I provided the canvas and told her which Pokemon I'd like and she did the rest. She did such an awesome job, it looks amazing!

Happy Birthday Mum!

Today was my Mum's birthday ....

Riley made her the cutest card. He's not big on drawing so it was nice to see him put some effort into making something for her.

 Love you Mum xx

Party Day!

Today we had our family get together to celebrate Riley's 5th birthday. His actual birthday isn't until next week but Labour weekend (being a long weekend) seemed like a good time to have a party.

Phil's family came down from Palmy and my brother flew down from Auckland for the occasion.

It was really nice having everyone together xx

Designer: Elizabeth Weaver

As I mentioned in this post here, I am no longer part of the Digital Elite Team at Digital Scrapbook Place. However I was snapped up very quickly by one of the designers and it totally made my day!

I'm really enjoying working one on one with Z, it's a lot less stressful than DET. I'm working at my own pace and I feel less pressure to churn out lots of layouts.

Elizabeth Weaver has some beautiful products in the store which you can find here.

My Creative Space: Neat 'n' Tidy Zippered Pouch

After participating in the kids clothes week challenge, I wanted to take a break from sewing clothes.

I needed something quick and easy to make so when I came across this tutorial for a cute zippered pouch it was just the thing. Now I don't really need another pouch but they're always useful for something.

The tutorial was easy to follow and my pouch turned out pretty cute. The fabric I used is one of my faves.

Felt Shop

I've had a Felt Shop for a while now. The reason that I've never mentioned it before is because there's not a lot in there (still isn't) but I'm hoping that posting about it here will give me some motivation to get creating.

KCWC Day 7: More Shorts

I've finished another couple of pairs of shorts ....

Pattern: Made my own using a pair of Riley's shorts.

Fabric: Grey cotton drill from Spotlight.

Sewing: These shorts come together very quickly. Now that they're finished they look like a pair of school shorts but when I first bought the fabric all I was thinking was that it was a nice neutral colour that will go with lots of different tops in Riley's wardrobe.

At 4 years, 11 months, 2 weeks and 3 days old

- You love numbers and counting.

- You can write your name.

- You can mostly get yourself dressed. You just need a little help with your hoodie/jacket.

- You can swing on your swing all by yourself. You don't even need a little push to get started.

- You love going to Kindy and playing with your friends.

- You can put your own shoes on.

- You love hanging out with Family but you always get really sad when they leave.

- You love Pokemon.

- You've started night time toilet training.

- You still love to sing and often come home from Kindy singing the national anthem.

- You love playing board games.

- You are constantly talking and full of questions.

- Since having your tonsils and adenoids out your voice is all cute and squeaky and you no longer snore (well not as much as you used to anyway).

- You love books.

- You've started drawing pictures of faces.

- You love pretending to fish using a hanger as your fishing rod.

- You don't like staying still to have your photo taken.

- You love Roary the racing car.

- You can spell some words - dog, cat, car, on, mum, dad - just to name a few.

- You don't like colouring in.

- You love mowing the lawns with your Dad. You pace along with him using your toy lawn mower.

- You still love cars. You can often tell what make they are just by seeing the backs of them and you walk to  and from Kindy so slowly because you are distracted by all the different cars driving past.

It's good to take a step back and remember some of the little things. Love you my little big boy xx

KCWC Day 5: Hoodie

I decided to try something new again and make Riley a hoodie. The weather is still very changeable so he should get some good wear out of it.

Pattern: Made my own using Riley's favourite hoodie.

Fabric: Navy fleece from my stash.

Sewing: It's the first time I've ever made a hoodie and it was actually easier than I thought it would be. I'm very imprecise when I sew .... I'm no good with measuring or cutting in a straight line so when something I kind of just threw together works out, it feels good. The hardest part was getting Riley to cooperate so I could take some photos.

My Creative Space: Crochet Coasters

Lately I've been making a few crochet coasters using this pattern here.

The pattern is super easy and they work up really quickly and make a cute addition to my lounge/dining area. So far I only have the 2 but it won't take long before I have a full set.

KCWC Day 3: T-Shirt Refashion

Today I tried something a little different ....

Pattern: Made my own based on one of Riley's tops.

Fabric: I sized down an old short sleeved tee that was too big for Riley and the fabric for the sleeves came from an old top of Phil's.

Sewing: It was the first time that I'd tried anything like this and I'm really happy with how it turned out. I used one of Riley's long sleeved tops as a pattern and added contrasting sleeves keeping the existing neckline and hem at the bottom for a quick and easy transformation.

I followed this tutorial here for downsizing my tee and reconstructing it.

KCWC Day 2: Shorts

I have finished 2 pairs of shorts so far! Considering it's school holidays and Riley doesn't like me doing any sewing, I'm not doing too badly.

I made my own pattern from a pair of Riley's shorts. I used a different pair for each as the light blue pair are pajama shorts so I wanted them to be a little roomier and comfy for sleeping in. The dark blue pair are more fitted and look really smart. They're really easy shorts to sew and look great on.

KCWC Fall Edition: October 8-14

I'm gearing up for the start of Kids Clothes Week Challenge over at elsie marley. The aim of KCWC is to commit to sewing 1 hour a day for 7 days and by the end of the week we'll all have some very well dressed kids. While it is the Fall edition, we're getting ready for Summer in my part of the world so I'm all set to sew up some shorts for Riley. I have 6 pairs cut out and ready to go.

These are the easiest shorts ever plus they look super cute on my little guy and what's even better .... no pattern required and I can get 2 pairs out of 1 metre of fabric so they're a bargain too.

5th Birthday Invite

Not long now until Riley turns 5! Even though we're just having a family get together to celebrate, doing as much digital scrapbooking as I do, I couldn't pass up the chance to make a cool invitation for my little guy.

It's not a themed party but he has requested a monster truck cake so I'm going with that for the invitation as well.

This is such a great basic quiche recipe. Use whatever meat/veg that you have on hand, yum!

3 eggs
1 tbsp oil
1/2 cup self raising flour
1 1/2 cups milk
1 cup grated cheese
salt and pepper

veges/meat for filling
(onion, bacon and silverbeet or onion, bacon and corn are good, I also like to lightly cook my filling first)

Preheat oven to 150 degrees.

Mix everything together.

Pour into a greased dish and bake for 40-50 minutes or until golden brown and filling is set.

My Creative Space: Earring Book

This 'book' was inspired by the needle book that I made last year ....

I don't have many studs but for the ones I do have I've always struggled with a good way to store them when not in use.

You just poke the earrings through the felt and attach the backs. It stores flat in my drawer, it's cute, easy to use and it keeps my earrings organised. I love it.
